Policy Change Highlights - July 2004

  • A revised 2004 version of the CIHR Grants and Awards Guide is in preparation and will soon be posted on the CIHR website.
  • Co-applicants who are trainees or research associates are now permitted to receive a stipend or salary from the grant for which they applied. This policy recognizes the intellectual contributions to research projects that can be made by a research associate or trainee. (Specific policy statement will be available on the website within the revised 2004 Version of the Grants and Awards Guide).
  • Terminal grants in the case of unsuccessful renewals will no longer be provided.

Program Development Highlights - July 2004

  • Introduction of the CIHR Team Grant: In September of 2004, CIHR will introduce the CIHR Team Grant. CIHR is currently in consultation with our applicant community and our partners to ensure that the CIHR Team Grant is carefully designed as a flexible and inclusive funding vehicle that can accommodate all desirable aspects of collaborative research. Expected to be an on-going, annual competition, this program will replace the Interdisciplinary Health Research Team (IHRT) and Community Alliances in Health Research (CAHR) programs. Look for the first Request for Applications for this new program in early September with a January, 2005 deadline for Letters of Intent.
  • Short Term Clinician Investigator Awards: As part of CIHR's Clinical Research Initiative, CIHR is pleased to offer new Short Term Clinician Investigator Awards. This program is designed to reduce the burden of teaching, administrative and clinical responsibilities that impede excellent clinician-investigators from focusing their expertise, experience and training on achievement of their health research objectives. Clinician-Investigators will be enabled to integrate a commitment to health research into their professional pursuits through allocation of three months release time. A maximum of 10 three-month awards valued at $25,000 are available to begin in the period January 1 to March 1, 2005 . The Request for Applications for this program will be posted in mid-August with a deadline for applications of October 15. When the RFA is posted, each eligible institution will be notified of the number of applications they will be allowed to forward.
  • CIHR Task Force on Career Support: In July 2004, CIHR's Governing Council decided to establish a national Task Force to provide it with advice on CIHR's future role in providing career awards to health researchers at all stages of their research careers. The task force report and recommendations will be submitted for Council's consideration at its November 2004 meeting. Work is now underway to establish the task force and further information, including Task Force membership and terms of reference will be available on CIHR's web site by September, 2004. In the meantime, if you wish to submit comments to the Task Force, you may do so via: careerTF-GTcarriere@cihr-irsc.gc.ca.
