More than 2 million Canadians suffer from diabetes, and according to the Canadian Diabetes Association this number is expected to reach 3 million by 2010. Diabetes alters lives. It dramatically increases a person's risk of developing many other serious diseases, from heart disease, to kidney disease, to vision loss. In fact, up to 80% of people with diabetes will die from heart disease.

Researchers are just beginning to understand the many factors that increase the risk of developing type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The risks factors are both biological, such as the genes you inherit, and behavioural, such as how often you exercise. To find better ways to prevent and treat diabetes, we need to take a deeper look at the roots of the disease and how it damages the body.

This month we're featuring a series of articles on CIHR-funded researchers who are looking for ways to prevent diabetes and its mental and physical side effects.
